May 2014 – Quick meeting roundup

What have the Scifantorites been up to in the past month…

Brett published The Cursed – Volume 1 on Amazon, it delivers five compelling short stories, all featuring people having a really bad day. Brett is also trialling uploading a chapter a week of his young adult novel “Cade Cooper” on wattpad.

Janis and Rebecca had their short stories published in the Gold Coast Anthology: Undertow.  The anthology was launched on 10th May, 2014.  The  day was a great success. More about the anthology is in a previous post.

Janis is away busy presenting at the Museums Australia National Conference 2014.

New words or phrases.

Greg’s, “Imagination is a muscle that needs to be worked!”

The Z’s,  “I ‘amish’ my children sometimes.”  (Translation: I ( remove, take, forbid  all electronic devices)).

Books, movies, TV, Youtube, games, anything that rated a mention this month.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. David does not recommend this although he enjoyed the first half of the book, the second half made him regret reading the first half. This is book 1 in a series.

Ragnarok: A Jack Sigler Thriller by Jeremy Robinson. Zane is enjoying this. He also recommends earlier books by the same author, Project Nemesis and Project Maigo.

Winter Be My Shield by Jo Spurrier. Brett is reading this debut novel by a South Australian author. He said that it is well written and has been well edited, unfortunately for him there is not much happening.

Movies – Dvds:

Captain America: The Winter Soldier got a good wrap from Brett and David.

Godzilla was given a ‘wow’ for special effects from Zane’s daughter.

Cloverfield a science fiction monster movie made in 2008 got a good wrap from the group as an excellent monster movie.

Battle for LA  had been sitting on a shelf at Zane’s place. It got a second viewing and this time was really enjoyed.

TV – Youtube:

Zane talked about a new TV series “EXTANT” that is coming soon. I just had a look on youtube and it looks absolutely fantastic. Have a look, link here.

Hootsuite was created in 2008 by Ryan Holmes. It is a social media management system. It can be downloaded for free. It might be worth a look if you need to manage a variety of social media sites like facebook, twitter, google+ etc.
